Your Virtual Ace is the result of my quest to find a career I would love and help others at the same time. I always knew I wanted to be self-employed, but getting there proved to be elusive. I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was impressed by those who had the courage to leave their 9 to 5 and figured out how to get paid doing what they loved. I even admired the not-so-successful ones, who never lost their drive and had the steely determination to reach their goals.
I’ll never forget my “A-ha!” moment; the moment I discovered what I wanted my business to be. For years, I volunteered my time to friends who were self employed or independent representatives and consultants. I’d create a newsletter here, a mail merge there, or compile a contact database. One day, my then-husband asked me to help him with some “administrative stuff.” He was an independent contractor who had to research leads across a large metro area, organize them by location, and document each lead he followed every day. His company’s corporate offices required a couple of reports at the end of each day. He spent most of his time in his car, visiting current and potential clients, and often found himself up all night doing research and paperwork. I was between jobs at the time, so I was happy to help. On about the third day, “It” hit me. I asked Hubby,
“Ummm…Is this something you think you’ll need help with on a continuing basis?”
“Oh, yes. Definitely.”
“How many other independent contractors do you know?”
“I know a few.”
“Do they need the same kind of help?”
“Yes. Some need more.”
Ding, ding, ding! The light bulb came on, the clouds parted, and the path became clear. So I hurried up and did…Nothing. I did nothing with that moment of inspiration.
Hindsight is always 20/20. I now understand that by focusing on “how” I was going to start my business, fear paralyzed me and I lost sight of “why” I needed to start my business. I believe that is what makes independent workers and the self-employed so special; it’s not that they do not have fear, worry, or doubt (they have to feed their families, too!), it’s that their belief in themselves and in the service or product they provide is stronger than their fear.
So, Your Virtual Ace was born out of this admiration and a sincere desire to provide a service that can directly affect a business’ bottom line. Imagine what you could do if you could hand off the “back office” responsibilities to a reliable, skilled partner. You would have time to focus on the activities that are core to your business.
